The Pakistan cricket team has brought great joy to the depressed nation currently immersed in titanic problems of terrorism and grinding poverty. This remarkable victory has lessons for all of us. If a team is united it cannot be defeated. Similarly if a nation is imbued with the indomitable spirit of unity, faith and discipline no power on earth can defeat it. If eleven cricket players can cause immense celebration, why cannot an army of ministers and hundreds of parliamentarians make the poor people of Pakistan happy?
It is now the turn of our politicians to replicate the performance of our cricket team. They can honour Benazir Bhutto by uniting to defeat terrorists and by implementing the charter of democracy in letter and spirit. The cricket victory has unleashed tremendous public energy which must be harnessed to bring about a quantum change in the quality of life of the people of this security-driven state. The cricket team has shown the way. It is for others to pick up the baton from the team and move on to generate more celebrations.
